VARK Learning Styles: What the Science Actually Says

If you've ever taken a quiz that told you you're a "visual learner" or an "auditory learner," you've met the VARK model. It's everywhere — in classrooms, study blogs, and onboarding flows for study apps.

It's also one of the most thoroughly debunked ideas in education research. That sounds harsh, so let's be precise about what's true, what isn't, and what to do instead.

What VARK Is

VARK is an acronym coined by New Zealand educator Neil Fleming in 1987. It sorts people into four "learning styles":

  • V — Visual: diagrams, charts, spatial layouts
  • A — Auditory: hearing things explained out loud
  • R — Read/Write: written text, notes, and lists
  • K — Kinesthetic: learning by doing

So far, nothing controversial. People obviously have preferences — some of us enjoy a good diagram, others would rather listen to a lecture. That part is real.

The Part That Isn't True

The VARK claim goes further than preference. It says you'll learn better if material is taught in your matched style — that a "visual learner" will retain more from pictures than from words, and so on. This is called the "meshing hypothesis," and it's the bit that doesn't survive contact with the evidence.

When researchers actually test it — teach people in their "matched" style versus a mismatched one and measure how much they retain — the benefit doesn't show up.

  • A landmark 2008 review (Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer & Bjork) looked for studies using the proper experimental design and found almost none supported the meshing hypothesis — and the few rigorous ones found evidence against it.
  • A 2018 anatomy study (Husmann & O'Loughlin) found students didn't even study in line with their VARK results, and those who did gained no advantage.

In short: you have preferences, but matching your study format to a "learning style" label doesn't make you remember more. Researchers call belief in it one of the most persistent "neuromyths."

Why It Refuses to Die

Three reasons VARK feels true even though it isn't:

  1. It's flattering and tidy. "You're a visual learner" is a nice, simple identity.
  2. Preferences are real, so the premise feels right — the leap to "therefore you learn better that way" sneaks past unnoticed.
  3. It sometimes works for the wrong reason. Turning a chapter into a diagram does help you — just not because you're a "visual" person. It helps because of two things that work for almost everyone.

What Actually Works (And It's Better News)

Your brain remembers more when the same idea arrives more than one way — words and a picture, or words and sound. The two traces reinforce each other. This is why a labelled diagram beats a wall of text, and why hearing a concept explained while seeing it laid out sticks.

The takeaway isn't "find your one true format." It's "give important ideas a second channel."

2. Retrieval practice

The research supports retrieval practice as a useful study activity, but “every single time” is too absolute. Its value depends on the task, timing, and quality of feedback.

So How Should You Study?

Forget the label. Do this instead:

  • Don't pick a format for who you are — pick it for the chapter. A dense process? Diagram it. A list of definitions? Quiz yourself. Something you can absorb on a walk? Audio.
  • Layer two channels on anything important (dual coding).
  • Test yourself early and often, before you feel ready (retrieval practice).
  • Re-reading is your weakest tool. Use it least.

VARK got one thing right: people have format preferences. It got the important thing wrong: matching study material to a “learning style” has not been shown to reliably improve learning.
